Professor at The NYU Jazz Performance Program, Columbia University Louis Armstrong Jazz Studies Program, The New York Jazz Workshop and The City Collage of New York, master workshops at The Dom (Moscow), The Rhythmic Music Conservatory and Vallkilde Jazz Program (Denmark), The Parmafrontiere Jazz Academy (Italy), The Taller de Musicos (Madrid), Yamaha Drum Academy (Tokyo), New York Jazz Workshop/Borghazi University (Istanbul) and many others. Bandleader of the acclaimed Tony Moreno Quintet, and The Tony Moreno Trios (comprised of Vic Juris and Dean Johnson, and Gary Versace and Francois Moutin), he has appeared on over 100 recordings, as well as numerous DVD's, radio (NPR) and television broadcasts.
- Short Bio:
Tony Moreno was born and raised in New York City. He began playing piano at the age of 3, encouraged by his mother, the harpist Nina Dunkel Moreno. Tony began private piano studies at The Dalcroze School of Music at 5. Tony began private studies with the drummer and percussionist Stan Koor at age 10. At 11, Tony met Elvin Jones, who gave him his first set of drums. Tony continued studying with Elvin for six years. Tony's first professional gig was at 12 at The West End in NYC. He presented his first group as a leader/composer at 16. After graduating from The Manhattan School of Music, Tony began performing extensively during the "Loft Scene" in NYC. He performed with The JCOA Orchestra (Carla Bley and Mike Mantler) including Cecil Taylor, Frederic Rzewski and Don Cherry among others) in numerous workshops and ensembles, as well as appearing regularly at the loft clubs at that time: Environ, Studio Rivbea and Ali's Alley. During that period, Tony was able to work and study with Jimmy Lyons. Concurrently, Tony was studying at Jazz Interactions under Al "Tootie" Heath, Art Blakey and Freddie Waits. After graduating from The Manhattan School of Music, he began freelancing with numerous groups. His mentors at the time included Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Jimmy Garrison, Pepper Adams, Frank Foster, Jimmy Owens and other musicians. Upon his return from living and working in Europe, Tony began establishing himself as a regular sideman in numerous bands which recorded and toured throughout the U.S. and internationally. He also continued volunteering as a music teacher for at risk teenagers at The Door/A Center of Alternatives.
Tony continues developing new projects: A Trio with Marc Mommaas and Miles Okazaki; a Sextet comprised of two tenor saxophones, soprano saxophone, bass and drums; a quintet for flute (Paul Lustig Dunkel), percussion and string quartet. He continues to travel, record and teach.
Tony Moreno endorses Paiste Cymbals (Andrew Rivas) and plays Sonor Pro Lights/Q2 Drums, Remo drum heads and Vic Firth sticks, brushes and mallets. Tony Moreno is a Mayimba Music Artist.
