Welcome!

Thank you for visiting the site of Jazz Drummer, Composer, and Educator, Tony Moreno. Please check back often as we are constantly adding new media, gig dates, and writings.

"Tony Moreno, a former student of Coltrane-drummer Elvin Jones, belongs to today’s masters of his instrument." Ken Micallef (Down Beat)
Tony Moreno’s musical journey began at the age of 2, when he started piano lessons with his mother, Nina Dunkel, a world-renowned harpist, pianist, and composer. Nina’s extensive training with masters such as Nadia and Lili Boulanger, Marcel Grandjany, Nicanor Zabaleta, and Pierre Jamet deeply influenced Tony’s early development. By age 4, Tony was enrolled at The Dalcroze School of Music, where he continued his piano studies.

At age 8, Tony began teaching himself drums using the Gene Krupa Method book and a Gladstone practice pad. At 10, he studied snare drum technique with Stan Koor, and by age 11, he was gifted his first drum set by Elvin Jones, beginning a seven-year mentorship with the legendary drummer. Alongside his studies with Elvin, Tony continued mallet and timpani lessons with Stan Koor, developing a wide-ranging percussion technique.

Tony’s first professional gig came at age 12, playing at The West End. By age 13, he was transcribing (trying!) Elvin Jones’s solos and comping during Elvin’s residencies at The Village Vanguard, bringing a manuscript book to every show. Tony also studied at Frank Ippolito’s Percussion Center, where he met many great drummers, including Tony Williams, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Papa Jo Jones, Mel Lewis, Billy Cobham, Philly Joe Jones, and many others. At 15, Tony received the Elvin Jones/Professional Percussion Center Scholarship to attend the Elon College summer jazz program, where he honed his skills further. He also studied at the Jazz Interactions weekly program, working with drumming greats like Al “Tootie” Heath, Art Blakey, and Freddie Waits. Privately, he studied  with Bob Moses and was mentored by Jimmy Giuffre at NYU, who encouraged him to compose original music.

Throughout his youth, Tony spent time with his mentors, sharing meals, attending concerts, and playing music with icons such as Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Jimmy Owens, Pepper Adams, Masabumi Kikuchi ("Poo"), Jimmy Garrison, Frank Foster , Jimmy Lyons, Dannie Richmond and Motohiko Hino "Toko".

After graduating from The Manhattan School of Music, Tony became an active freelancer in New York, performing with major figures like Bill Dixson, Don Cherry, Roswell Rudd, and Michael Mantler. He was also part of the iconic New York Loft Scene, performing with musicians such as Carla Bley, Bill Dixson, Don Cherry, Roswell Rudd and the JCOA Orchestra with Cecil Taylor.
Following a European tour, Tony decided to base himself in Europe, while still touring and recording regularly in the U.S. and abroad. He toured and recorded with groups such as Barry Harris Trio, The Gene Ess – Ravi Coltrane Quartet, the Lounge Lizards (“Live in Tokyo – Big Heart”), the Timucin – Greg Osby Quartet (“Live in Istanbul”), and the Mal Waldron Trio, among many others. He also worked with notable artists like Sal Nestico, Palle Danielsson, Doug Raney, Spooky Actions ("Live in Moscow"), and many more.

Tony has appeared on over 150 recordings and toured in over 30 countries. His latest double-CD recording, Short Stories, was named Best Recording of the Year by The New York Jazz Record (2016) and received 4 1/2 stars in Downbeat.
As an educator, Tony has taught for over 20 years at some of the most respected institutions in the world, including the NYU Jazz Studies and Performance Program, the Columbia University Louis Armstrong Jazz Program, and the City College of New York Jazz Program. He has also volunteered for a decade at The Door – A Center of Alternatives in NYC, where he worked with young people in need of guidance.

Tony is a proud endorser of Paiste cymbals (Kelly Paiste) and Le Soprano drums (Marco Gambarisio). He is also a recording artist with Mayimba Records and Sunnyside Records.

On a Personal Note: Thank you for visiting my web page. It is greatly appreciated. In the Downloads drop down menu you will find the score for "Episodes for Flute and Percussion" which you can listen to on "Paul Lustig Dunkel - Alive in the Studio - Dunkel - Moreno - Muskal - Shostakovich" Master series Recordings MS1554. There is also a hastily written textbook I wrote years ago for a guitar workshop. I hope to do a proper textbook in the future. I will also add my compositions and additional material over time.

Plato: Music is a Moral law
The Buddha: All life is suffering; the keys to unlock that suffering is love, compassion and knowledge
